New County History on Sale
Charles Bodie has written a new narrative of the county’s history to replace the 1920 account by Oren J. Morton. He has brought us up to date! Bodie’s materials range from public records to private correspondence, and include business ledgers, diaries, yearbooks, newspapers, and other primary sources.
This is a fresh and comprehensive account of our county, starting with the Native American presence and moving through the early land grants, town settlements, the spread of schools, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the coming of railroads, highways, and other important events of the twentieth century. The book also contains numerous illustrations, footnotes, and a generous index.
Now available in paperback.

One of the first projects undertaken by the Society shortly after its founding 70 years ago, was to memorialize its programs and activities by publishing the RHS Proceedings. The first volume was published in 1941. The latest addition to this popular series, Volume XIII, is available at RHS’ Campbell House headquarters. This high-quality paperback covers RHS programs presented during the period 2003 – 2005 and continues our fine tradition of presenting interesting scholarly articles established in the dozen preceding volumes. Col. Tom Davis reviewed Volume XIII in our March 2010 issue of News-Notes.
Volume XIII may be purchased at Campbell House for $19.95 plus sales tax. If ordering by mail, please include $5.00 for shipping and $1.00 sales tax (for Virginia orders).
Following years of research and writing, an all-new Roads of Rockbridge is available. This major book project is a joint effort of the Rockbridge Historical Society and the Lexington-Rockbridge-Buena Vista Board of Realtors. The original books, The Roads of Rockbridge and The Streets of Lexington, written by Winifred Hadsel, were published by RHS. They were hugely popular, and have been out-of-print for several years. The new, expanded edition combines both books in one and includes all of Buena Vista’s streets as well. The new full-color book has 1807 road listings, 150 maps, and interesting historic geologic notes.
Roads of Rockbridge may be purchased at Campbell House for $39.95 plus sales tax. If ordering by mail, please include $5.00 for shipping and $2.00 sales tax (for Virginia orders).
Available for purchase at local bookstores, by mail order, at Campbell House, or in our online store.
