On the eve of its 75th Anniversary in 2014, the Rockbridge Historical Society will be hosting its annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 14, from 1:00-4:00 PM. RHS will welcome its members and the public to the Society’s historic headquarters at the Campbell House (101 E. Washington St., across from the Visitors Center). The Open House will showcase a final opportunity to view Col. Ed Dooley’s groundbreaking virtual tour of a digitally reconstructed “Main Street Lexington, 1867.” Musical offerings plan to mix children’s voices, professional instrumentalists, the Society’s historic pump organ, flute, banjo, and fiddle in a range of holiday carols, and historic and regional styles. Alongside the Campbell House’s permanent collection of elegant furnishings, artifacts, paintings, weapons, industrial tools, maps, and genealogical resources, visitors may also enjoy the seasonal opportunity to browse the historic series of miniature, hand-printed Christmas pamphlets, typeset and locally distributed for many years by Harold and Ida Lauck. As the gift-giving season arrives, visitors can also take the opportunity to purchase the newly re-priced paperback edition of the Society’s landmark County history, Remarkable Rockbridge, along with a variety of local maps, and publications of local historical interest.
